V. E. Messinger Home - 1895

The Spicery Restaurant is located in Glendale's oldest house, the historic Messinger Home, built in 1895. Messinger was the first town clerk when Glendale became incorporated in 1910. He is credited with starting the first library because he used to let the local children read his books and when a formal library was started he donated 400 of his own books to the cause. He lived in the home until 1936 when it was purchased by the Brewster Family. Mr. Brewster was a painter by trade and the home still bares some of his creative signatures. The family owned the home until 1988 when it became what is now the Spicery. Some of the locals that grew up in the area still think of it as Ron's or Rex's place, the sons of the Brewsters. Much of the landscaping was planted by Mrs. Brewster. There are old Pecan and Grapefruit trees and beautiful iris that have been coming back year after year since they were planted decades ago.

Come and visit us when you are in downtown Glendale. We have six unique dining rooms and all have a charm of their own. Or you can relax outside on our garden patio. We serve our Spicery Quiche, chubby sandwiches, large salads and a daily special. Our dinner and sandwich rolls are baked daily as are the Cinnamon Rolls for the coffee house next door.
